On Wednesday (April 9th) Billy Joel made the 10-minute motorcycle drive from his Centre Island home to catch the students of Glen Cove, Long Island’s Deasy Elementary School perform a tribute to him. The “Piano Man” was on hand for the kindergarten-through-second grade spring concert, The River Of Dreams: A Billy Joel Tribute, saluting his best-loved songs held at the Finley Middle School’s Wunsch Art Center. Deasy’s principal, Nomi Rosen, told Newsday, “We invited Billy Joel on a lark, but we didn’t expect him to come. It was totally thrilling. We were all beside ourselves. I asked him if he wanted to sit in front, but he said he would rather stay in the back so he wouldn’t make the kids nervous,”

Rosita Mallo, the school’s music teacher and concert director, admitted, “I found out two minutes before the concert started that he was here and it totally freaked me out. My nerves went sky-high. . . This was a very welcomed surprise. It gave the kids extra energy to perform.”
